Bryan Gee is, simply, one of the most significant figures in drum ‘n’ bass history. As co-founder of the V Recordings family of labels, and as a deejay with an apparently bottomless crate of dubs, he’s changed the game on multiple occasions.
His career trajectory is as unique as those exclusive plates he can play. Starting out way back in the seventies as a reggae soundsystem selector in his native Cheltenham, he eventually made his way to Brixton where he teamed up with Jumpin Jack Frost. As a deejaying partnership, they championed the emerging acid house sound. Bryan became well-known as a man with his finger on the pulse, earning him a job pushing the new rave-orientated music for the Outer Rhythm label, newly formed as an offshoot of Rhythm King.
As a crucial member of the respected original FullCycle V recordings and Reprazent Stables , Suv has Undoubtedly contributed his fair share to Drum n bass and definitly to the sound of Bristol . A member of the seminal Bristol trip hop group FRESH FOUR in 1989 burst onto the scene with Smith n Mighty and the first ever TripHop track to have major success with ‘Wishing on a Star’ reaching top of the UK charts .Mercury Prize winner in 1997 and MOBO prize winner as the group name of Ronisize Reprazent . Suv has continued to carve his musical journey as a producer , singer song writer, Dj ,always with the intent to break new ground.
Donovan Bad Boy Smith
Radio DJ, mix master extraordinaire, mentor and one of the unsung heroes from the early days of drum and bass, Donavan ‘Bad Boy’ Smith’s – one of the original proponents of Britain’s Soul, House and Rare Groove scene – contribution to the UK’s underground music scene cannot be understated.
Playing a pivotal role in taking the sweaty, emerging, up-tempo, hardcore sounds that were bubbling up from the streets of London at the end of the 1980s and early 90s, Donavan disseminated these new jungle and rave sounds up and down the country via his residencies at superclubs like Swindon’s Fantazia and famed London hotspots such as the Astoria, Busby’s, The West End’s Gardening Club and Club Da Da on Shaftesbury Avenue.
